Do the Raiders deserve leeway on the Rooney Rule based on their track record of hiring minorities and women?

I think there should be a “one-interview” exception to the Rooney rule. If a team knows who they want from the beginning, interviews him, and he wants the job, any other interview is a sham. I don’t think we should either punish a team for deciding to make an effort to hire a specific candidate who is a proven winner or require minority coaches to interview for jobs they aren’t really in the running for. Conversely, any time more than one candidate is interviewed, minority coaches should receive a bona fide interview and actual consideration for the job.

The Rooney Rule as currently constructed is a farce that is used to show the NFL’s (lackluster) “commitment” to diversity. However, studies have shown that when minority coaches are hired, they are given less time and are more likely to be fired compared to white coaches. The Raiders–nor any other NFL team–do not deserve leeway for past hires. The league consists of roughly 70% African American players, yet only 25% of head coaches are people of color. That discrepancy is too large to ignore. The Rooney Rule has been a moderate success at best. Change is needed.

Perhaps we’ll see the Gruden Rule. A coach who has prior tenure with that team, has first dibs to return to a prior team. A former coach has put that team first, during his time there. And in many cases brought success to that organization. So whether he steps down as or is released, if the team wants to bring him back they can. I mean if the N.Y. Giants wanted Parcells back, he should be able to come back to the team automatically. Don’t you think?

The Raiders have had more Black coaches then most teams if not all teams and an Hispanic one. I guess everyone forgets that. They want one person that if he was Black we wouldn’t be talking about the hire right now. What a Joke.

I’m not sure if they should be given a pass or not but the thought that a team with the history that the Raiders have when it comes to diversity and women (drafted the first black QB, first black head coach, first latino head coach, first woman executive, black general manager, hell even a black punter) is somehow not diverse if they hire Gruden is beyond dumb. This is a team that was ahead of the curve before there was a rule requiring them to be.

Why should the Rooney rule exist. Simply the best candidate should be hired no matter what race or sex. This is true in any job not just sports.

Yep… give the Raiders a pass! The Silver and Black has a rich history of giving people of all races, genders and ages first, second and heck even third chances. From the youngest coach in NFL history (at the time) to the first African American coach, the first Hispanic coach to the first female executive, they’ve done their share of opening our eyes to the magnificent capabilities of not just one race or one type of person, but of humanity. Clearly this is about fit and comfort level.

Get rid of this rule. I’m sorry but if they do this why not demand a certain amount of whites on a team? Or Hispanic? Why have a rule as a sympathy for people? If I was apart of any demographic that could look pathetic and needy where’s is a mercy/requirement…yeah I’d be embarrassed. Just hire the most qualified! You shouldn’t HAVE to interview anyone because no other job demands you to HAVE to interview if u find a perfect fit.

The Rooney Rule should be scrapped. I support the spirit of the rule in that there should be accountability by team ownership for fairness and equality of opportunity in the hiring process, but the rule doesn’t accomplish this; it just allows teams to interview a token candidate to avoid any bad P.R. In my view, the public scrutiny that inevitably follows every head-coaching search in the NFL should be the means of accountability. As long as there’s sufficient transparency in the process, teams shouldn’t be able to discriminate in this day and age without the public catching on.
