Sports in 2016 epitomized #BlackGirlMagic, and we have the receipts

ESPN’s Cari Champion breaks it all down

From the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro to the WNBA to Wimbledon, espnW’s Cari Champion explains how black female athletes exemplified grace, athleticism and “Black Girl Magic” in 2016.

The term “Black Girl Magic” went from a trending social media phrase to a flat-out movement over the past year. The term is used to identify and celebrate the dopeness of black women and girls everywhere. It has no formal definition. You won’t find it in any traditional dictionary, but will likely hear it being used in a formal setting. It’s a three-word catchphrase that simply captures the essence, beauty, intelligence, wit, power, resilience and triumph of women of color.

Actor Jesse Williams used the term during his acceptance speech at the 2016 BET Awards this year.

“The thing is, that just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real,” he said referring to the #BlackGirlMagic movement.

Since its launch, The Undefeated has been serving all types of #BlackGirlMagic. Don’t believe me, check it out.
