Kevin Durant makes himself right at home in the Bay Area

The newest member of the Golden State Warriors expresses how he feels about joining the team

It seems as if Kevin Durant is settling in with his new team quite nicely.

After officially signing a two-year, $54.3 million contract with the Golden State Warriors, Durant spoke at a news conference held Thursday to discuss his decision and how he feels about the team so far. Before making it official, Durant wanted to meet with the other players to gauge how they felt about him before joining the team.

“I wanted to see those guys face to face, so the meeting that they had was very important,” Durant said. “I wanted to look Steph [Curry] in his eyes and ask him how he felt about a guy like me joining this team.

“Those guys came in, it felt like they were hand in hand, and they just wanted to let me know how much I would fit in with their group personalitywise. They’re different guys, but they all come together and make it work. It was natural, it was authentic, it was real, and I just felt like I needed to be a part of it.”

The former league MVP seems to be getting pretty chummy with his new teammates already, feeling comfortable enough to take playful jabs at guard Klay Thompson: “I didn’t even expect him to be here,” Durant said with a smile. “He texted me — I didn’t know he had a phone. He exceeded my expectations as a person.”

One teammate who’s excited to have Durant on board is forward Draymond Green. Green said he wasn’t concerned about how Durant’s other team meetings would go, but felt confident after leaving their own. He describes Durant’s signing as surreal and looks forward to sharing the court with his new teammate.

“Just to see him joining the squad — joining the family, you know, that’s the way we look at this,” Green said. “It’s a surreal feeling, and I’m excited for him. He’s happy with this decision. He wanted to make his decision as a man, the decision for himself, and I’m happy he had the opportunity to do that.”
