Dancing officer gets in ‘Formation’ with Beyoncé-inspired routine

Lt. Deuntay Diggs of the Stafford Country Sheriff’s Office in Virginia did not come to play. He came to slay.

Diggs is proof that there is at least one person who can do Beyoncé better than Beyoncé — or at least he comes in at a close second. Diggs broke out his best moves for the Fredericksburg Parent and Family Back to School Expo and School Drive, where school supplies were collected for the upcoming school year that will be donated to students in need. A 45-second clip of Diggs performing Beyoncé’s 2016 song Formation, which was posted on Instagram by user mrldavis, has now garnered 15,000 views.

“I knew I had to do something because the other competitors were close, and so I was like I gotta step it up,” Diggs told ABC 7. “It came out.”

What makes the routine even more special is that Diggs wasn’t afraid to choose a song that encountered much controversy upon its release in February. Some critics believed the No. 2 Billboard hit harbored anti-police messages while a police union even went so far as to encourage others to boycott the singer’s music and tour.

“People have different interpretations of the video and the song,” Diggs said. “I don’t take it as an anti-cop song. I like the song. I know there’s a lot going on nationally when it comes to law enforcement and the community, and so I’m really focused on bridging that gap and listening to people.”

It wasn’t the first time Diggs had been bitten by the Beyoncé bug. The lieutenant, who describes himself as a “huge Beyoncé fan,” performed some of the pop star’s most memorable moves before this year.
