Week 7: Howard’s Philyaw and N.C. A&T’s Cohen have great days running the ball
Other top performances include Delaware State running backs and receivers from Bethune-Cookman and Hampton
North Carolina A&T State University’s outstanding senior Tarik Cohen is easily one of the best running backs in college football. Cohen’s exploits have been well-documented this season. However, it looks like the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has another great running back in Howard University’s Anthony Philyaw, who has put together some impressive performances.
Philyaw was terrific in a losing effort to South Carolina State University. The Bison rusher had 32 carries for 160 yards in a 14-9 loss to the Bulldogs. Philyaw, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound junior, averaged 5.0 yards a carry. He’s a talented back who can run between the tackles and get to the outside.
Philyaw is second in the conference in rushing with 757 yards on 140 carries, and has scored five touchdowns this season. Cohen is the MEAC’s top rusher with 890 yards. Both players are on pace to reach or surpass the 1,000-yard mark.
Philyaw has amassed more than 100 yards in four of Howard’s six games. He had a season-high 234 yards against Monmouth University. It’s been a real struggle for the Bison (1-6 overall, 1-3 MEAC) this season, but Philyaw has been a shining star for Howard’s football team.
Speaking of stars, Howard will host North Carolina A&T (5-1 overall, 3-0 MEAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C. This game will feature Philyaw and Cohen, the MEAC’s best running backs.

- North Carolina A&T’s Cohen had 23 carries for 220 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Aggies to a high-scoring 52-35 win over Bethune-Cookman University.
- Bethune-Cookman wide receiver Jawill Davis had nine receptions for 143 yards in the Wildcats’ 52-35 loss to the Aggies.
- North Carolina Central University wide receiver Jalen Wilkes had six catches for 105 yards and one touchdown in the Eagles’ 33-3 win over Savannah State University.
- Savannah State linebacker Marquis Smith had a huge game in the 33-3 loss to North Carolina Central. Smith had 10 total and seven solo tackles, including four tackles for a loss, and two sacks.
- Delaware State University running backs Brycen Alleyne and Mike Waters had 169 and 150 yards, respectively, in the Hornets’ 41-27 loss to Florida A&M University.
- Hampton University wide receiver Rashawn Proctor had nine receptions for 93 yards and one touchdown in the Pirates’ 21-12 win over Morgan State University.
- Alabama State University running back Khalid Thomas had 150 yards on 16 attempts to guide the Hornets to a 56-24 win over Mississippi Valley State University. Thomas averaged 9.4 yards a carry.
- Mississippi Valley State wide receiver Joshua Banks had eight catches for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the Delta Devils’ 56-24 loss to Alabama State.
- Alcorn State University linebacker Darien Anderson had 13 total and five solo tackles, with four tackles for a loss and two sacks, in the Braves’ 23-20 win over Texas Southern University.
- Alabama A&M University linebacker Kenneth Davis had 10 total and five solo tackles in the Bulldogs’ 40-7 victory over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Davis also had two tackles for a loss and one sack.
- Bowie State University quarterback Amir Hall completed 25-of-36 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 38-37 win over Virginia State University.
- Tennessee State University defensive back Ezra Robinson had two interceptions in the Tigers’ 35-28 victory over Eastern Kentucky University. Robinson returned one of those interceptions 93 yards for a touchdown.
