These three Milwaukee judges are trying to keep some folks out of jail
They offer to toss out some arrest warrants while violators figure out how to pay their fines
If you live in Milwaukee and have an outstanding warrant, you just may be in luck.
Three municipal court judges took to Facebook to offer an opportunity that could keep some people out of jail. Judges Derek Mosley, Valarie Hill and Phillip Chavez agreed that “anyone with a city of Milwaukee municipal court warrant, driver’s license suspension or car registration suspension can have those warrants and suspensions lifted without making any payment whatsoever,” in a recent video.
According to ABC affiliate WISN Milwaukee, citizens with those outstanding warrants or suspensions can show up to municipal court on any of the first three Wednesdays in November, the court will lift the warrant and they will not be arrested.
The individuals still must pay any outstanding fines, although the warrants will be lifted without any initial payment. The judges’ main goal is to inform citizens that the system is working with them and they want to eliminate the fear of coming forward while trying to help people get on the right track.
Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett praised the judges.
“I think they’re trying to make sure that people can get themselves out of that hole,” Barrett said. “Obviously, I hope it’s successful.”
Barrett said he doesn’t know how the plan will impact the financial portion of the outstanding warrants. “That’s something we want to have our budget office involved in, to see what kind of fiscal impact this will have on the city.”
