The singer gives major bucks to the movement
In recent weeks, athletes, celebrities and public figures have used their platforms to take a stand against violence and police brutality. On Wednesday, Ethiopian-Canadian singer/songwriter The Weeknd added a philanthropic twist to his résumé with a hefty $250,000 donation to the Black Lives Matter movement.
After the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by police last month, The Weeknd took to Twitter to voice his frustrations. “Enough is enough,” he tweeted. “It’s time to stand up for this. We can either sit and watch, or do something about it. The time is now. #BlackLivesMatter”

The donation comes only a week after the singer gave $50,000 to the University of Toronto in an effort to jump-start an Ethiopic studies program at the institution.
“Sharing our brilliant and ancient history of Ethiopia,” he tweeted. “Proud to support the studies in our homie town through [the University of Toronto].”
