‘Power’ recap: ‘I Got This On Lock’

Angela is in the doghouse, Holly is pregnant and Kanan is alive and almost well

Season 3, Episode 3 | “I Got This On Lock” | July 31

Tasha St. Patrick (Naturi Naughton) is back in business with Tommy (Joseph Sikora), and really that’s almost enough to fill a good hour’s worth of drama on this show.

With any luck, the writer’s room gods and goddesses will use this as a potential setup for some really good double-teaming to be set in motion.

And Power — and Power fans, hello — love a good old-fashioned double team. Thankfully, this season (so far!) has plenty of them.

But that ain’t how Power rolls. Power gives us plenty of theatrics in one tightly edited package.

And we’ll take it.

The big takeaway from this episode is that Kanan (50 Cent) is alive and almost well, and is lying low in Washington, D.C., at his cousin’s home. And, man, his cousin is one of the most interesting, complex female characters we’ve seen on TV in quite some time. Jukebox (Anika Noni Rose) is a cop — a heroic cop who is feted in the public eye for saving us all from criminals — but she’s bad to the bone. Played effortlessly by Rose, Jukebox is a lesbian, a gangster, a “quick to pull the trigger”-type of woman and she doesn’t really seem to care who you are, how closely aligned she was to you or what you did for her in the recent past.

She’ll off you.

Just like that.

(We see where Kanan gets it from.)

New character Jukebox (Anika Noni Rose) delivers the perfect criminal archetype in the most unexpected package.

This is a good look for Rose, a chance to stretch those delicious acting muscles, and, man, does she deliver the perfect criminal archetype in the most unexpected package. She’s scary good, and every scene she’s in we want more of.

For his part, Ghost (Omari Hardwick) is steady trying to stay clean. Or get clean. He filters in and out of the underworld so much, we’re not sure if he’s coming or going or could snap at any given moment. In this moment, he’s given a new business opportunity that could help take his nightclub business to the next level, but only if he bests his shady, across-the-street adversaries.

And he’s still keeping one eye open, figuring that Felipe Lobos (Enrique Murciano) is still trying to kill him. (He’s right. He is.)

Speaking of Lobos, Tommy still hasn’t carried out the hit on Ghost from the drug overlord, who ordered him to do away with his former business partner/best friend. Tommy is hesitant and for good reason: Until recently, Ghost was the one man he trusted, his confidant, his business partner and his brother. His girlfriend Holly (Lucy Walters) wants him to kill Ghost, naturally, considering that Tommy alerted her to the idea that Lobos will kill her if he doesn’t execute the order. And seeing as how Lobos has someone break into their home and kill the dog …

Ghost is also dealing with domestic issues: After a weekend sleepover at his home with his girlfriend Angela Valdes (Lela Loren), his son Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) steals her gun that he finds while hiding in her closet. And he takes it to school.

And, well, he gets in trouble and puts his criminal parents on high alert.

The highest of alerts.

And Angela in the doghouse. And, bloop — Holly is pregnant.

So much is happening in this episode, but really it’s just setting the rest of this fantastic season in motion. So many juicy tidbits, such a great setup for a big payoff, so much crime.

Next week can’t come quickly enough.
