Keeping up with Brodie: Westbrook breaks Big O’s record

Oklahoma City star breaks Oscar Robertson’s historic triple-double feat

Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook finished the 2016-17 season with a total of 42 triple-doubles, which surpassed the great Oscar Robertson’s 1961-62 record of 41 triple-doubles in a single season.

Westbrook was able to do so in a barn burner on April 9 in the Thunder’s 106-105 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Westbrook scored 50 points, collected 16 rebounds and handed out 10 assists against the Nuggets. That followed April 7’s milestone when he joined Robertson as the only players in NBA history to average a triple-double for the season.

Westbrook is averaging 31.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists. Robertson averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists in 1961-62.

Brodie will look to continue adding to his overall count as OKC heads to the playoffs as the sixth-seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

I called gAME!

NBA legend Oscar Robertson had three letters to say to the fans attending the Oklahoma City Thunder’s game against the Denver Nuggets:

“I only have one more thing to say: M-V-P!!” the Associated Press reported Robertson said. “When Russell was on this journey, I felt that I just had to be here,” Robertson told the crowd. “What he has done has been historic in nature. He’s played with passion and pride and ability. It’s is just outstanding what he has done and the way he did it.”

Russell Westbrook, the first player since Robertson in 1961-62, got one of the biggest endorsements someone in his position could receive for the coveted league honor. The game itself was a negligible matter, as Westbrook, who was on pace for his 43rd triple-double of the season, was pulled after playing the first half of the game in the Thunder’s 111-105 loss to the Nuggets on Wednesday night.

The guard finished with five points, five rebounds and eight assists in 18 minutes of work. Robertson, who published a piece in The Undefeated breaking down his feelings watching Westbrook break his record, was at Chesapeake Energy Arena to give the pregame announcement and personal commend Westbrook on his achievement.
