Jessica Williams is leaving ‘The Daily Show’
The ‘woke’ young feminist is moving on up — to her own space on Comedy Central
Transparent. Sassy. Cognizant. Hilarious. Sharp. Bold. Unafraid.
These words describe 26-year-old Jessica Williams and the magic she has been dishing out on The Daily Show for the past four years. But the end of June marks the end of her reign as the high-profile correspondent. The comedian is leaving to work on her own scripted comedy, set to air on Comedy Central.
Williams hit the scene in 2006 on Nickelodeon’s Just For Kids. But it was in January 2012 that she started bringing the noise on The Daily Show, and she quickly developed a following. In fact, she soared.
“I feel so many emotions,” she said to Entertainment Weekly. “I feel like I’m growing up and graduating.”
Her still untitled half-hour series will feature a vibrant and “woke” main character who is interested in politics in general. “It’s a show about someone in their 20s who has all these social ideas but still, like, does not have it together,” Williams said. “And she’s goofy and silly and funny … I think that a lot of the time, we have this idea that when you are, like, ‘woke’ … that you should always have your s— together … it’s a show about somebody in their 20s who has all these social ideas, but still does not have it together.”
Williams also has a podcast called 2 Dope Queens.
