Golden State’s Splash Brothers define comeback style

Curry and Thompson make dressing look easy like Monday morning

Memorial Day 2016 was heartbreaking for the Oklahoma City Thunder, who lost a critical Game 7 to the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. But it was a storybook finish for the Warriors, who completed an epic comeback to head to the Finals.

Warriors Steph Curry and Klay Thompson might be risk-takers on the court, but they’re not known for being risk-takers in the style game. They generally stick to a basic game day uniform of jeans, sneakers and T-shirts. But this game was a different, high-stakes beast. And your boys stepped it up just enough to let their calm elegance shine.

First, the jackets. Both went for pieces in unusual, fashion-forward colors: a pine green leather moto bomber for Curry, while Thompson went for a less structured pilot style in a burnt-brick hue. Conservative padding in the shoulders and modern detailing let the players’ top layers be the focal point. This is how to do nonshowy dressing: pick one good thing and let it shine. The rest of the outfits — Curry’s stiff, waxed dark denim and Thompson’s soft, beige jeans — were simple and relaxed. If they were nervous, it didn’t show.

Pro athletes often say they don’t regret missing family gatherings when big, important games coincide with a national holiday. Maybe there are worse fates than Aunt Irma’s boring potato salad, or your rebel cousin playing every cuss-laden song in the Cash Money catalog while the elders wait for someone to bring them a plate of food. There are, and the Thunder knows it too well.

Next up, the NBA Style Wars, finals edition, when the Cleveland Cavaliers meet the Warriors in Game 1 of the NBA finals on June 2.
