‘Dreamgirls’ cast spreads the love to heart transplant patient
From the stage to the bedside, the cast gets an A+ for this surprise
You never know whose life you may touch throughout your journey. Desiree Roots, a cast member of the musical Dreamgirls, was touched by a man she met years ago, so she wanted to take some time to lift his spirits.
Roots first met Earl Fleming when she was 13 years old. At that time, she was part of the soulful musical The Wiz.
Fleming is currently awaiting a heart transplant at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. Roots and the cast were spending time performing in Richmond at the Virginia Repertory Theatre, so they decided to surprise Fleming.
According to WTVR, staffers at the Pauley Heart Center joined a few workers at the Virginia Repertory Theatre to make the surprise performance happen.
“He has literally been a part of my life ever since then. And he’s family,” Roots said.
