Defining the ‘real’ Serena Williams through the eyes of director Ryan White

Leave it to four-time Olympic gold medalist Serena Williams to allow the public to see her life. She just debuted Serena, a new EPIX original documentary narrated by Williams and directed by Ryan White, which premiered Wednesday.

Viewers will witness the external pressures and vulnerabilities Williams faces in her quest to achieve four Grand Slam titles in a row and her losses at the 2015 U.S. Open and 2016 Australian Open. The film takes a look at Williams’ life off the court, capturing moments with her family, coaches, trainers and friends.

“It’s very hard to get Serena to talk about tennis when she’s not playing tennis,” White said.

The documentary takes a closer look at all sides of her life as an athlete, designer and businesswoman. According to the film’s press release, “it explores the pressures that come with being No. 1 in the world, and Williams’ unflinching commitment and drive to succeed, ultimately emphasizing the humanity under all of her accomplishments.”

Williams said 2015 was a defining time in her life and career.

“I think my story will be relatable to audiences whether you love tennis or not. It’s a story of perseverance, failure and triumph. It’s the most intimate I’ve ever allowed myself to be on film. It was a scary but ultimately really gratifying experience, which I’m hoping inspires others to pursue their dreams. I’m really grateful to EPIX for this incredible opportunity and the care they’ve shown me. Can’t wait for you all to see it,” she said.
