LeBron sips metaphorical tea as the fans chant ‘MVP’

*Clears throat*

Earl “J.R.” Smith III went from emotional in Oakland, California, to lit in Las Vegas in record time. The shoot first-second-and-third guard went full-fledged Dame Dash — pouring bottles of champagne on people and leaving teammate Richard Jefferson to play peacemaker. Now the 2016 NBA champions are back in their hometown and already receiving a hero’s welcome.

Finals MVP LeBron James exited the plane with the Larry O’Brien Trophy and was hit with well-deserved MVP chants from fans who probably and understandably won’t return to work for the rest of the week. So excited he delivered on his promise, The King belted out a battle cry vaguely similar to the one found The Lion King.

The Cavs and Warriors have played in the past two Finals. And there’s no reason to think both couldn’t go Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier for a third time next June. If it does happen, let the record show their back-and-forth, a year and running at this point, may never die. James, ever the strategist, dons a Kermit the Frog sipping tea hat and — wait for it — an Ultimate Warrior T-shirt. Emphasis on the phrase Ultimate Warrior. Because that’s not coincidental gawd-level petty at all.

But what’s really important in all this is that Smith — affectionately known as Spray R Smiff — still doesn’t have a shirt on. He may not wear one until training camp starts in the fall. But it’s fine. Really, it is. We’ve been waiting on this moment for well over a decade, my people. The Summer of Earl is upon us. Let us rejoice and be glad.
