Charles Barkley is donating $2 million to two HBCUs
Alabama A&M and Clark Atlanta will benefit from the NBA great’s benevolence
NBA great Charles Barkley is known for being vocal about black issues spanning from Black Lives Matter to policing in the black community. But he doesn’t mind giving back.
On Tuesday, the former Auburn All-American and retired NBA Hall of Famer announced on WJOX radio in Birmingham, Alabama, his donations to two historically black colleges – $1 million to Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama, and another $1 million to Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta.
Barkley is a charitable guy. In 2015, he donated $1 million to his alma mater. His pledge marks the largest individual gift to Alabama A&M in the university’s 141-year history.
“This is a transformational gift to the institution and a true measure of Mr. Barkley’s commitment to advancing educational opportunities,” said Alabama A&M president Andrew Hugine Jr. Barkley’s gift gives the university’s fundraising a boost, giving it nearly $25 million, exceeding its $16.25 million goal.
The Leeds, Alabama, native had a successful 16-year NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets.
Clark Atlanta president Ronald A. Johnson said, “This gift reflects Charles Barkley’s tremendous heart and his desire to make a significant, positive and lasting difference in the lives of others.”
