One of California’s first black doctors still going strong at 93 years old

When this nonagenarian wakes up, he’s planning to see his next patient. It’s a trait most doctors possess. But this doctor has been practicing medicine for more than a half-century. As if that in itself isn’t undefeated enough, 93-year-old Dr. James Hutchinson also happens to be the first black doctor in San Mateo, California.

Hutchinson said the headline Negro M.D. Gets a Permit is one he will never forget reading. And it didn’t stop him from reaching his full potential. He’s not only maintained a successful medical practice, but sees patients of all races and has built a reputation in the San Mateo, California, community for never turning anyone away because of their inability to pay.

Hutchinson earned his medical degree from the Meharry Medical College School of Medicine in 1952. According to The Minority Health/Black Blog, he said he continues to practice medicine because he enjoys it. He gains his strength from tragedies, as both his wife and one of his three sons died. Remembering them brings him the willpower to keep striving for greatness.

“I was brought up in a family tradition that you give back to the community. That if you were born to be fortunate, you don’t get to hoard all your apples,” the Shreveport, Louisiana, native said.

Hutchinson was once known as the “walking doctor” because he could be seen walking the downtown streets of San Mateo clocking in six miles per day. He has become an inspiration for all.
