Hosted by President Barack Obama and the first lady, the festivities included performances by Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Robert Glasper, Aretha Franklin, Sting and Esperanza Spalding.

“I just invited all my favorite jazz musicians to play in my backyard, which is one of the great perks of the job,” President Obama said.

Halfway through the event, Franklin took the stage to remember Prince.
